She’s beautiful and talented, but where Jana Kramerreally shines on her debut country album is in her ability to select songs. Not only has she found 12 tightly-packaged, colorful ballads and pop-country cuts to make her own, but she’s found songs that fit her like the perfect pair of broken-in cowboy boots.

‘Jana Kramer’ (in stores June 5) is perhaps the most surprising album of the year. She and producer Scott Hendricks do a nice job avoiding common newbie pitfalls like crafting an album that “has a little something for everybody.” With songs like ‘I Hope it Rains,’ ‘Why Ya Wanna‘ and ‘Good as You Were Bad,’ we’re introduced to a woman that has loved and lost, but still believes she can love again. The repetition of the theme (‘Whiskey,’ ‘King of Apology’ and ‘Over You By Now’ also tackle heartbreak in different ways) never goes monochrome. Each songs comes with a fresh approach and varied emotion.

It’s clear Kramer had an idea of who she was as a singer before stepping into the recording studio. As a result, we’re able to not just enjoy her songs, but to feel as if we’re getting to know the woman behind them. This takes many artists years — or at least multiple albums.

There is at least one moment on ‘Jana Kramer’ that’s too sweet (‘Goodby California’ is like a country Pixie Stick), and maybe some listeners won’t care for one or two of the ballads. Indeed, Kramer’s specialty is the mid to uptempo songs, with the dark and gloomy ‘When You’re Lonely’ being an exception. This song is just the hand to the face that the project needs.

It remains to be seen how much the ‘One Tree Hill’ actress will commit to country music. Country fans are loyal, but have been down this road before (Julianne Hough). With a project this good, leaving us for another acting appointment would feel like … well, how Kramer feels on many of the songs on ‘Jana Kramer.’

Rating: 4 Stars

You can listen to another song from Jana’s debut album. This time it’s One of the boys. On oneoftheboys.janakramer.com you can also watch the video.

I’m tired of these high heels
The higher they get, the more trouble I’m in
I’m sick of this makeup
Just to take it off and put it on again
I look at those boys in trucks
And think how easy that must be
I’m already ready to shotgun the Chevy
Boys are you ready for me
Gimme a ball cap with blue Levi’s
I’m hangin’ with Jack and Jim and raisin’ ‘em high
I’m might just flirt if I see something I like
Yeah I’m just one of the boys tonight
Hey there, I’m talkin’ to you, you wanna drink with me
No honey I’m buyin’, put your money away
This one is free

Yeah…Jana just released music video for I Hope It Rains. You can watch the video here. If you are able to download this vid, please contact with me (mail: lovelyboots@gmail.com) ’cause I want to do screen shots and add them to the gallery.

I heard you got yourself a date already
Funny, thought you needed your space just five nights ago
I’ll bet you’ll take her to our favorite spot
Blanket down on the ground and chicken from my stove
And when you pull her in close

I hope it rains on you
Maybe a little bit of lightning too
And I hope it comes a flood, lotsa mud
Messin’ up your whole day, hey hey
And I hope it rains

Don’t get me wrong, I hope she’s really the one
And if it’s love, you know I wish you the best
You’ll probably have yourself an outside wedding
With violins, all our friends and her in a pretty white dress
And right before that first kiss

I hope it rains on you
Maybe a little bit of lightning too
And I hope it comes a flood, lotsa mud
Messin’ up your whole day, hey hey
And I hope it rains, and I hope it rains

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s ‘Hot Nights at the Hall’ summer concert series for museum members will return on June 5 with a performance by hitmaker David Nail. The series, which debuted last summer, features live music, food, autograph signings and exclusive access to the museum and Museum Store. Upcoming performers include Jana Kramer on July 13 and Love and Theft on August 31.

Admission to Hot Nights at the Hall is free to all museum members. Membership at the museum begins at $40 and includes admission to all three concert events as well as a year of free admission to the museum and much more. A membership may be purchased at the event or online HERE.

“Our members are a vital part of our museum family, and their contributions directly support our mission,” said Museum Director Kyle Young. “We created Hot Nights at the Hall last year as a way to say ‘thank you’ to the members we have, and to encourage others to join us by providing them with a really great value and yet another benefit to museum membership. We’re excited to bring the series back this summer and again offer members old and new a chance to hear some great music, meet the performers, and enjoy our exhibits after hours.”

Each Hot Nights at the Hall event runs from 6 – 9 p.m.; concerts begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by autograph signings in the Museum Store.
